From the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) - The popularity of beach volleyball (formally known as sand) has exploded over the last few years. It made the quickest transition from an emerging sport to a championship sport in NCAA history. It’s also the fastest growing NCAA sport over the last five years in Division I.
In 2010 the NCAA officially recognized beach volleyball as a collegiate sport. In 2014 beach volleyball was approved to have an NCAA D1 championship . DII and DIII were added in 2015. The first championship was held in 2106. There are currently more than 80 colleges offering beach volleyball programs and the list is growing.
